is the word 'diary' better than the word 'blog'? probably not.

feather squirrels, weird figs, spear fishing, rum drinking.

we are definitely not staying at the ritz, as they say. we are in a three-room cabin for six people. there is one bathroom and it's cold water only. the kitchen is OUTSIDE on the patio. and we're in the middle of a trailer park, though our hut is not a trailer. however, the trailer park is right on the beach in rincon, so we've spent all day everyday swimming in the ocean and getting sunburnt and watching the sunset, then drinking rum and/or beer. plus, the weather is so warm that it doesn't matter about the cold showers and the cooking outside. the mosquitos are aggressive, but that's what they make DEET for, so all is well.

last night the bar on the water (located about 20 feet from our front door/outdoor kitchen) was raging with the reggaeton (a puerto rican rap-style, muchas musicas y cosas), which is fun but gets old with a lethal swiftness. so we backed elias' rental car up next to our hut, set up a table on the dirt road, cranked up the tunes through the subwoofer in the trunk and played dominoes while drinking rum punch out of a plastic water jug. it was Very Trailer Park. we laughed hard when Elias pointed out all the details of our evening. Taiko taught us how to play dominoes on Thursday, and that night Elias and I won, despite how difficult arithmetic is. last night Caroleen and I formed a team called Mittens and we beat the other teams (perhaps because I found a way to turn dominoes into a drinking game). c and I also developed a series of cat-based cheers and dances, and mitteny high-5s for our gaming.

there are wild roosters, hens and chicks everywhere, and they can fly, and they sleep in the trees! (song, to the tune of a 70s ad campaign: "what describes rincon? chickens in the tree.") very strange. these tree-chickens (aka feather squirrels) keep dropping things on our roof, things which caroleen has declared to be "weird figs." so one of our favorite sentences of the week has been, "the feather squirrels just dropped another weird fig on the roof." it startles me every time. not the sentence (since usually I am the one saying it), but the weird figs.

today while caroleen and I were swimming, around 10am, lots of pelicans were flying up high and then mad-dive-dashing headlong into the water nearby to get fish. we have seen no whales, nor manatees, though we are told they are around. there are lizards of various sizes. jeff and elias caught some fish (with a spear!) and made ceviche. there are caves and mountains and rainforests inland but apparently this trip is all about the beach. no complaints from me. there's more to tell but it's time for sleeping now.
