to whom it may concern:
here's today's suggestion: if you're a man, don't be the man who instructs random women on the street to smile. just don't be that man. you may think you're flirting, or that you're spreading sunshine, or "helping" a girl look more attractive, or whatever other host of reasons you think you might have, but what you're really saying, deep down, is something more like: "I deserve to have all the pretty faces of the world please me, because it's all about me, without regard for the lives of others... in fact those 'others' are there to please me first, and then, if there's time, i'll also let them live their own richly complicated lives later."
so, yeah, mister, i'll smile. and then, in your dreams, we can go on a date and i'll be sure to ask you all about yourself. not that i'll have to ask, really, because THAT WILL BE ALL YOU SEE ANYWAY: yourself. In fact, I'm not even sure why I need to be there on the date, except that it would be harder for you to get a table for 2 when it's just yourself and a mirror.
the fact that i am writing this does not mean that i am an angry man-hating woman. i write it because i can be in the midst of a lovely high-spirited day, wearing my face that sometimes neglects to pose itself in feminine smile, and all of a sudden some dumbass tells me to smile and i am overcome with contempt. it is just inexcusable. even if i should be smiling, all of the presuppositions behind the request are just way too objectionable to cause in me anything other than the opposite of a smile. so listen, heterosexual dude. the women of the world are not your oyster. think about what it would mean to tell some other dude to smile, and then ask yourself why you would not do that, and then get a clue.
or: next time, why don't you just try smiling instead? IT MIGHT WORK!
