is the word 'diary' better than the word 'blog'? probably not.

clog wild on the heel world.

That title is not some form of dadaist automatic writing, I assure you....

Lately, the work-work-workyness of being at a new job, teaching a new course, trying to plan a new curriculum for a new program, while living in two different places and getting ready to move into a third while packing up the other two, all of this has turned me into someone who wears clogs too often. It is sad.

Be forewarned. For all their practicality and sensible-shoe stylings, Dansko clogs are dangerously easy to twist ones ankle in. I swear, every little crack in the sidewalk can send a whole foot sideways, the attached leg right after it. The shoes look so sturdy but they are still platforms, and platforms are all or nothing, after all.

Theres something so sad about the spectacle of looking clumsy when youre already wearing totally uncute shoes.

So there you are, girl in sensible shoes, still stumbling around like you wore heels and forgot to think about walking.

And there, in a nutshell, is the content of my Learning Annex course called How To Walk In Heels. (Evany Thomas idea.) When you walk in heels you must pay heed to your steps much like you must pay heed to your steps when you hike in rocky terrain. Because when wearing heels or hiking in rocky terrain, every step could end in peril or injury as the ground shifts beneath you. But, also in both cases, the risk is worth it due to the views.

Thats it: a bit of extra thought about where you are stepping, and you will be fine.

Also, make sure you can walk normally in the things. It is so tragic when women walk around jerking their limbs or curving their backs or not curving their backs or testing every step as if they were trying out stilts for the first time. Walk with confidence or stick to the clogs.

The other rule: dont buy heels that make your feet hurt or cramp up. Find some comfortable heels. It is possible. You might need to pay a bit more money for them. But your foot and leg health is worth it.

This comfortable-heel quest youre on may be difficult, however, depending on your shoe size. If your foot is much smaller than an 8, then heels will all feel higher to you, due to the shorter length of your foot. So you may need to go for a 3 inch heel instead of a 4 inch heel. Me, size 8.5, Ive pretty much decided that 3.75 inches and a .25 to .5 toe platform is the perfect heel for me, though I can go a bit higher on occasion if necessary. And if I have to do a bunch of walking, 3 to 3.5 inches is the way to go.

The best way to learn what you are capable of in various heights of heel is to wear them around the house for longish periods of time.

Fluevog and Fornarina both make miraculously comfortable heels. So does Manolo Blahnik, but I know that only from having worn my friend Marians, not from the experience of owning any. Im not saying you should spend THAT MUCH.

But you never know, maybe youll get lucky, like I did with that pair of Prada heels, and end up with some Blahniks at a Fornarina price someday. Shopping can be fun, and sometimes leads to miracles.
