is the word 'diary' better than the word 'blog'? probably not.

getting it right/letting it be.

Here's a song that I have listened to on constant repeat on numerous days in past months. It's good. The song had made me cry many times before seeing the video... you know, the kind of song that causes moments like this: you're walking down the street happily listening to a great song on your ipod and then all of a sudden you are a crazy person crying in public for no reason? And then, this! This video. (Note, it is better if you click on this link and then click on the button to watch it full screen.) I appreciate how Karen O inhabits being a rockstar as if it were a form of breathing. I once saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs play live and she was wearing this batshitcrazy bodysuit with a bejeweled crotch and somehow it looked awesome. That is knowing how to be on stage.

When I posted this video to facebook one of my fb friends objected that he's tired of all the post-Cat-Power female vocal stylings. But I OBJECT to that criticism. Karen O is not Chan Marshall. If there's anything here that I would call influence, it's Chrissie Hynde. And Chrissie Hynde is a good place to look for influence.

I do appreciate Chan Marshall/Cat Power. But the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are not taking or receiving (...and taking and receiving are not the same) anything from Cat Power. The End.

In other music news, here's a new song by David Lowery that the record label called "too challenging." I think it's good.

This is exhibit gajillion in the case called "record labels can be stupid." "The Palace Guards" is one facet of the guy who also writes radio-ready gems like this (the source of my recently facebook-quoted meaningful lyric "sunrise on the river in the city/ i'm feeling pretty shitty, in the wreckage of our life"). Calling "The Palace Guards" "too challenging" is stupid because: you can't get "Low" or "Teen Angst" without "Dr. Bernice," you know? (And you can't get Key Lime Pie or Kerosene Hat without Telephone Free Landslide Victory or Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart.) You have to be ready for the whole package, or you don't get any of its parts.
