is the word 'diary' better than the word 'blog'? probably not. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- findings revisited! Included among the many, many goodnesses that accrue from having dated a logician named Richard, is the following statement of the limits to the conclusions made by my last post on How Men Are Disappointing: "A propos your latest diaryland post: Can I point out two relevant factors that might influence your inductive reasoning? a) Sample bias: if you predominantly have relationships with men, it's predominantly men that disappoint you. That doesn't invalidate the conclusion that most/all men disappoint but the conclusion isn't particularly surprising if it so happens that most/all people (women included) disappoint. b) Confirmation bias: notable things like being cheated on or lied to are more salient than others and hence are more readily taken to confirm a generalization than the opposite." He continues: "Of course you know this. And it's probably cold comfort. I'm just sayin'. Shit happens to everyone, not only women who date men. Doesn't make it less shitty, though." Word. And I sure am glad that Richard happened to me, way back when, and still now. 10:08 a.m. - July 10, 2010 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
