is the word 'diary' better than the word 'blog'? probably not.

The Kids Are All Right is all right.

No spoilers here, so read on confidently.

When I saw The Kids Are All Right, at some point early on in the film I was a bit worried, like, wait, is this movie going to be about how two women raising two kids need a dude to intervene in order to do a good job? Ugh! But then, later, the plot got more complicated than that. It was about difficulties inherent in any longterm relationship. And then, even later, like way after the movie ended, I realized that what was really good and even, perhaps, transcendently good about the film was that it was just trying to show how hard marriage is, how fucked up every family isfor better and for worseand how clueless and needlessly cruel even the most well-intentioned liberal types can be. It just happened that this particular story was about a family parented by lesbians. It wasnt a story about a lesbian marriage. It was a story about life. And it was well done.

Karen and Jasbir do a much better, more thorough job of pointing to some of the ups and downs about the film and its reception in this really good article (spoilers included).
